So, that wasn’t too bad! 2 wins and 2 losses at BBB new blood! I got quite lucky but this bot was really just meant to use up some old parts and material I’ve had lying around for a while. All things considered - really happy with the outcome!
So now… how about a Doom Device sequel?
Two main problem areas with V1:
Robot too smol - weapons had poor reach & effectiveness
Robot too chonk - side armour and ground game forks had to be removed to fit in 1.5kg.
Even tho “make robot bigger” and “make robot lighter” don’t go usually go hand in hand - there is a clear solution:

I reckon I could save around 200g by going brushless on drive and weapon with some Repeat tech. And there’s definitely some ways I could optimise the armour/chassis as well. So let’s say roughly 250g to play with.
And what to do with this weight?
- Larger lifting forks that can really pick up other robots
- Increase mass of spinner
- Belt drive the hammer disc so it’s not constantly ejecting m2 screws
- Self righting capability
- Larger wheel base to improve control
- Wheel guards
- Optional wedge for horizontal spinners
Sounds like a lot for 250g! But worth a shot!
A big constraint on this new build is to avoid outsourcing manufacture. It will remove complications from holidays or delays or minimum orders and such. In house manufacture also gives me more flexibility for rapid iteration and testing in my new test box. And the biggest bonus of all is more shed time, which is always welcome!
The catch is that I don’t own a lathe or a 3d printer. Or have easy access to cnc. So I might have to get creative, but that will be part of the fun! ![]()
