'Av-it - Hobbyweight build log

Just searched it and that does look super cool. £5 for a bottle and like every colour you could choose from…looks like it would work on the TPU but not sure how well it would dye HDPE though

Rit Dyemore is what I use on Sunday Drive so if you want a good idea of what you could potentially pull off (alongside what battle damage can look like) here’s a photo of Sunday Drive from the last MITE contest I went to:

It’s a little bit blotchy but that’s only because I’m working with two different colours.

Not sure about how well it would work with HDPE. The Dyemore is specifically made to be used on materials such as TPU (if you use the regular Rit Dyes it takes hours to get TPU to start changing colours). Unless HDPE doesn’t react well to being dunked in boiling water I’d recommend printing out a small sample to use as a test and see how well it takes to the dye.

i dont recommend dyeing hdpe, we had to boil sheets for hours to get anywhere close to pink for flamingo. wasn’t pleasant from what @Joe said about it

Ready for Keighly Clash 1lb and beetles…

‘Av-it seems pretty big…:grimacing: maybe my wedge for the 1 horizontal is a little overkill. Let’s hope it’s in weight! I just build and remove weight afterwards… not one of those spreadsheet guys

The Hardox has arrived and the HDPE has arrived. Time to finalise my cad and start cutting!

The effective diameter is 179mm, 12mm thick, 600g for the blades and 800g for the disc! I could have gone a fair bit heavier but for now I am happy with how they have turned out.

Few little bits left to do before I start cutting HDPE. Measure twice, cut once is the old saying.

One last reprint and assemble (so much wasted plastic )

Can guards seem to work nicely and the aluminium motor mounting plate doesn’t allow any movement/wiggle of the motor in its little tunnel.

Need to print the other sides and tap the other holes still. I went with the aluminium just so I could tap the holes and have some rigidity. I tried with PLA but it allowed some flex.

Check out the excellent Alixpress quality.

Motor guards fit quite nicely. Will add some air /speed holes to the top. Keep coming up with excuses to not solder it all up and get it moving.

Slow progress but back on it as the Hobbyweight championship creeps ever closer.

Test fit all parts into the chassis and it all fits, av’ it! Will have bullet connectors for the motors but won’t use connectors for the power lines. Going to splice them all together in the area currently housing the fuse. Once all soldered up and taken the pla chassis for a spin I’ll start cutting the hdpe. All simple cuts so should only take a couple of evenings. :crossed_fingers:

Now sporting a new 4mm thick carbon fibre base kindly cut by Andy. :heart_hands:
