Adriel is a thwackbot which can either be a torque thwackbot or a sit-and-spin. Has nearly reached completion, but shoddy wiring got the better of it. Named after a robot from MLU4’s Robot Wars series.
Hurricane
An overhead horizontal which will probably require me to bring a hammer to every event. Debut will likely be at the next BBB Ant event. Former names included Katrina, Stormrunner and Whirlwind. Will be printed from TPU as to not violently explode the second it touches a wedge. Trust me, I’ve seen things.
A new printer from ELEGOO (from who I get the PLA+ on Y2K) has been set up, with the old TINA2 seeming like peanuts to it. Spares for Y2K are being printed as I type this.
Hurricane will be ordered in 2 stages, one being for the drive and another being the spinner electronics. A 100mm blade will be bought from ULL Robotics. The drive stage has been ordered. Why did I choose an overhead? I’ve seen a video of fellow horizontal, Vampire, completely shatter a vert’s polycarbonate support, and I am hoping to do the same.
Adriel is going to be rewired at some point. The project’s still alive, I swear!
Another announcement, I am hoping to build an absurdly wide robot similar to the likes of SMEE. The robot will be split into two halves which operate independently, like a clusterbot, but connected with a big metal (or plastic) plate. As for how it’ll bend the rules, see Killjoy Robotics’ video about their fellow wide robot. The name hasn’t been completely decided, but a working title is Nyon!, google it if you don’t know the reference. There will be an angled fork at the front to help against horizontals and help with ground game.
Y2K (which I only just realised looks like Crashfest) is now partially made of TPU, now weighing in at 131g, only one gram above what it weighed at the Bristol event, although missing a few screws. All it needs now is bigger wheels and likely a TPU lid and it’s all set for GRoCS to fight alongside the widest, tallest, strongest, and most absurdly named of them all. Will the former distance-maker do it again? Lemon’s there too.
As for Hurricane, Y2K will be the testbed for the TPU used in its main body. An asymmetrical bar will be used against vertical spinners, as it both has more bite to snap supports in half and halves the chances of bending.
That’s the thing, I haven’t built Hurricane yet, but the printed parts (TPU body and forks) are existant. Hoping to wire the drive today. The spinner (as in the weapon) will be ordered soon.
Y2K, however, has had the new TPU lid and bigger wheels installed.
You better take cover (what the top is meant to say but TPU was TPU and got wet), 'cause here’s Hurricane! A pusher for now, until the £24 spinner electronics are ordered, hence the red pusher arm. Powered by two 1000rpm N10s, it’s the nippiest of the bunch by far. Will probably have a few whiteboards at GRoCS this weekend, or just be a static display piece, watching on in relief that it won’t have to face the biggest of vertical spinners to date. Yet.
The sequel to C. Lemon. The internals will be taken out of Y2K and be put into a new PLA+ body, with a new grabber, as C. Lemon’s old internals have found new use. Ever since the invasion of the SVRN grabbers, and how Y2K’s forks can easily nullify their ground clearance, a grabby copy could shift the balance. Plus, they’ve been dying for a better design. And better wheels. The 34mm wheels have little to no traction on the metal floor. To combat this, Lego hubs will be printed for it.
Pole Position (formerly Injury Time)
Finally named it. Anyways, said robot is going to be the replacement for Hurricane once the drive motors are sorted out. It’s a 2wd vertical spinner running 3s and a 75mm disc for the big hits we all know and love. Add the 2300kw brushless motor into the mix and you’ve got a dangerous package.
Updated:
Nyon! (again.)
The newer version has been inspired by robots like Cygnet and Fliplup (mainly Cygnet’s absurd flips and Fliplup’s 4wd) and will use four whole N10s to drive around the arena. Forks will also be on the flipper, as well as a wedge or scoop variant for those pesky horizontals.
Y2K
Y2K now uses a metal servo to drive the lifter. Hoping to get some new wheels at some point, as the old ones are tattered.
How is injury time going together? Sounds somewhat similar to Vanquish and I’m curious how you plan to construct it to get it within weight and competitive. You may struggle to find a motor light enough while still being able to self right effectively
Thinking of using the 1500rpm N10 motors for maximum boxrush capability. Plus, the wheels will be big enough so that it’d only need to reverse to get back up. Also going to cast wheels for the first time for it.
New plans have been made for both Nyon! and a new robot.
Nyon!
Now a SVRN Printbot. This one’s the grabber variant, and will use the Red ESCs I made a whole post about. Ironically, due to using new ESCs, Adriel returning could be a possibility. In fact, I accidentally ordered 2 extra drive motors. Watch this space!
New:
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
A vertical spinner bought from ULL Robotics. Unsure if I am the first to use this name. Probably won’t be in tournaments until 2027.
Also thinking of making a Hijinx or Calypso-style undercutter (using the blade brought for Hurricane) named C.E.F (Catastrophic Existence Failure) because that’s what it’s likely to do the second it touches a wedge. This will replace Y2K’s position in ARCS. (as Y2K will be moved back to PLAnts)
