How to stop motors shuddering?

After I got everything in my robot set up, when I try to move the stick around to make the robot drive all that happens is that the motor shudders about. I have made many changes with the transmitter with no change, the receiver is new and working. The battery is fully charged. How do I get the motors to actually drive?

Could you show a picture of what you’ve built, and of the wiring loom? Hard to diagnose an issue if we don’t know what parts you’re using!

I will show in a bit. As I was trying to do this the servo BEC blew. I can’t keep wasting money every day on this stupid hobby if it just means another 15 quid the next day on this or that. I have lost ANOTHER RECEIVER, ANOTHER BEC, it gets to a point where nothing is fun because something new breaks.

what happened was the servo BEC touched the fuse on the link and seared it. the shuddering issue I still don’t know but will probably mean new ESCs too

What sort of motors are you using for drive?

Unfortunate to hear about the issues you’re having. Fuse links are great, but you have to have some form of protective insulation over them to stop issues like that.

I’d ask if you have everything plugged in the right way into the receiver? It’s difficult for me to make any definite judgements, but it seems your signal wire on the servo is plugged in on the same pin that the ground wires are going into for the BEC and ESC’s, so either the servo is in the wrong way, or the motors are.

I’m unsure but I bought them from here in 2025, they are brushless

After a second test the damage seems to not be an issue and everything is still working. Still got shuddering

I have no clue and no clue what to buy if something is wrong and I have no clue about anything that goes on in this robot because something breaks then I get another bit then something breaks and I do it over and over until when?

I don’t see any solder on the ESC’s, are you just poking the motor wires into the ESC? If so, they won’t be able to make a consistent connection, and that’s critical with any brushless drive given how many pulses happen in a single second.

It was just for testing using some connectors to hold the motor wires in the correct esc places before soldering soon if I can get things to work

In that case they are almost certainly shuddering because they aren’t connected well enough

How do I test which one works for which then without ruining the stuff?

With brushless motors and motor controllers, you want to solder each wire to an independent pad. if a motor is spinning the wrong way after that, you can either fix the mixing in your transmitter, or desolder a pair of wires and swap which pads they’re soldered to. Unfortunately there’s no easy way to do it without soldering everything up first.

Everything works now with the cost of my servo BEC due to not looking at my link position

Might be worth checking that yellow signal cable, it should be on the same row of pins as the other signal connectors (white cables):
