I’m Swapping to the 1806 for more torque for the bigger disc, and because the only bigger disc I have has the hole pattern for the 1806.
I’m running n10 1000rpm for the drive and 600rpm n10 for the arm. Was having some issues at GRoCS with the mechanism but will have it sorted for ORCS.
Right so I think I’m going to use the bearings you suggested on eclipses topic, but I’m not sure what size to get as the screw thing that attaches to the motor is about a m4.8 lol.
M4.8 is unusual, does an m5 bolt thread into it? If so just the 5mm id 8mm OD ones should do you fine. Hammersaw weapons dont tend to need heaps of torque as you tend to only really swing when you have a pin, and if you cant spin up to speed and strike in 10 seconds that’s a greater issue than motor power. Looking decently well together after GROCS, I presume I only really ripped the wedgelets off, as i couldnt get much bite due to my poor traction, which will be fixed shortly.
A quick look up suggests that a 4.8mm thread could be a #10 imperial thread.
If it measures 4.8mm across the crest of the threads it’s almost certainly M5.
In practice threads are rounded over at the crests for clearance, since in the real worth everything is rubber (even metals) and it’s not practical to make things to perfect tolerances.

I know in the rules it says you may start in on position, then expand to be outside the size limit once the fight starts, but is there a size limit to how far you can expand? Because if not, I could just have infinitely long forks when starting like this:
That’s what sir googly does, and yeah as long as it fits in the box it’s fine. Stupid ass rule because you can just circumvent it so easily, so there may aswell not be a square at all
Before AWS adopted the square, we used the square to expand what people were able to do (rather than the very restrictive cube) without allowing the sort of robots that are just arena wide blocks of foam. Our arena was only 80cm wide so this was important. It worked as intended. Now people can build wider.
Of course that doesn’t mean you can’t think what you think, but worth remembering none of these robots would’ve been possible in the past, and that the change was made positively for the above reasons.
I’ll forever take the square rule over the cube rule any day, definitely the best thing to ever happen for the rules, made designs much more interesting.
I do like the fact there is a creative challenge to keeping your robots inside of a certain size limit, and its a lot less irritating than the cube rule ever was. I think its a happy medium that can allow for some more creative designs without giving people the ability to just take the piss…
I do massively appreciate the shift away from the cube, but I still cant understand why a size limit is needed or useful as despite the switch to a square allowing bigger robots it’s still a limitation that isnt used many other places
I’d contact the respective Event Organisers of the events you’re competing at - but please be respectful as remember all organisers are volunteers running events with their free time, and if you want to do things your way you could also run an event! (Also a reminder BBB are no longer hosting antweight events - they’re being hosted in the south west by ARCS & GROCS)

As mentioned by Craig we introduced the square rule because our arena size limitations - this isn’t just the small floor space, there’s also other factors to consider such as robots being able to fit in the pit and out of arena zone. Most importantly as a safety thing - robots have to be able to fit in our ammo box in case of lipo fire, which is also a requirement in larger weight classes at our events too. (so in fact there is a size limit at beetles too!)

No reason to be sad about BBB not doing ant events. The ARCS guys will replace us so easily, they’re are great and we wish them all the very best with carrying the flag of Bristol antweights forward.
Not running ant events mean we get to put more focus into our other events, as well as bring a little more actual (voluntary, as Joe says) work-life balance to BBB. Might even be able to have time to actually do our hobby a little more than just putting the events on!
Will the bbb ant events use the bbb arena or the GRoCS one form now on? Will be a shame if I missed out on using your guys ant arena, it looks super cool.
Agreed! i was hoping to be able to fight in it one day as it was a really nice arena, wouod be a shame to never get the chance
ARCS will be using the GROCS arena for September.
BBB arena is open for them to use in future if/when they have the transport.

Update 2: it’s now in a LiPo bag, in a big metal tin with the lid slightly open in the same spot in my garden
Seems like only the casing got chewed up, but I think you should order a new one as the cells could be FUBAR (and I don’t mean the featherweight).
I have 1 spare, so I just have to hope that one Dosent fail me at ORCS tomorrow. the lipo was pretty puffy as well…
Make sure you are being safe. ANY damage to a lipo is dangerous, and thats clearly not just the shrink wrap over the top torn there.
