No big dill my 2nd ant bot a, what I like to call ‘sometimes suplexer’

Hello all,

I’ve finnaly decided to show the build for my 2nd bot, no big dill ( get it? Like no big deal!? )

Anyway this was the original concept just a few shapes thrown together (by the way this whole robot was made using Tinkercad just because I find it so simple and easy!)

It’s based off the Battlebot Big Dill:

So yeah! Unfortunately not thinking I would be doing a build diary like this the isn’t really much build pictures… or text I kinda forgot and will make sure to give frequent updates after this post… sry. So when I started the bot I set a target to get it ready in time to go to October GRoCS So I wasted no time getting started. At the start I just printed and printed every time somehow managing to find a design floor every time. Very frustrating….. luckily I had my own printer! I managed to get it ready for GRoCS just in time with some very late nights rushing to get it ready before! And we were off to Gloucester!

It went better than expected as I went 5-5 a pretty good score for a new bot I would say considering most of my losses were me driving into the pit… whoops!

So unfortunately No big dill couldn’t make it to the semi finals but… PLOT TWIST!!!

turns out the top three in the plants made it through and the last spot would be decided by a last chance rumble! Thanks to a great turnout the rumble was absolute chaos. My strategy was to just basically sit in the corner and shoo off any one who dared come near me and it sorta worked! After what I thought was literally forever (8 minutes) it was me vs a bot called parallelogram a bot that was literally a parallelogram so flipping it was completely pointless. I managed to capitalise of a driving error and shove him in the pits! So I was through to the semi finals ( I also won the last GRoCS rumble with my first bot, The dot bot, a bot so heavy I couldn’t actually put a dot sticker on it because it would’ve been overweight)

Anyway through to the semifinals I was but unfortunately my draw was against burning tiger who had a great history of winning GRoCS a few times…

I managed to put up a good fight though, for about 30 seconds until I fell into the pit partially because of my driving inexperience and partly because of Samuel’s very good driving.

The 3rd place play off didn’t really go to plan either as once again I started well but hurcules the bot I fought a grab and lift bot caught my in its grasps and I couldn’t quite wiggle free before he drove me into the pit.

But I did manage to walk away with a best new bot award!

Me hanging out with jungle man with our awards!

Anyway I’ll post tomorrow maybe about what happened after (redesign, rock and robots, future plans)

Anyway thanks for reading sry it wasn’t very detailed see ya later ! Ooh also I think I’ll be going to CAT4 as well on the 22nd so if anyone else is going, see ya there!

Quick update, after GRoCS I designed a new front bit to control better, maybe?

Sorry it’s kinda blurry

So I put that on and took the little pickle to London to take part in rock+robots!

Btw imma just call rock and robots R+R cus it take to long to type:)

So R+R didn’t go so well I came out the main draw with a 1-2 score (I faced third and the winners from last R+R :frowning: ) and the 3v3 didn’t go well either, going out in the first round. I think the main thing is that I just need to get as much driving experience as I can before I can be a bit more competitive and start getting top threes (annoyingly I’ve finished 4th in both GRoCS that I’ve been to ….) Oh also I came 6th or was it 5th:thinking: in what was probably the most chaotic rumble I’ve been in. Credit to Eli for getting such good turnouts at his events! Anyway I think your up to date now with no big dill, current status on CAT4 is undecided (I don’t know if my dad will drive my there)

Ps if I do go, where is the CAT4 signup?

Cheers for reading

Ooh three more things I forgot to mention,

  • How can I make more suplexy other than just having the lifter arm the same height as the opponent WITHOUT a grab and lift mechanism
  • How to make the bot look siiiiiiiiicccccckkkk, where to get/how to make cool decals
  • How to get the bot as spinner proof as physically possible (while staying under 150g) as I plan to take it to some spinner comps soon.

Hi, it was great seeing you at R&R!

The signup is here but you can also come without signing up. It just helps us know how many people we have coming.

To make it lift better you could make the barbs on the bottom forks bigger and maybe just one. I’m not sure if thiss would work but it’s something you can play around with.

Chamfers (or fillets). And maybe some pickle texture.

Tpu. Tpu bricks are practically indestructible at this scale.

Thanks,

With the suplex thing I definitely agree there is some experimentation to be done I will try your suggestion for sure

I’m planning on printing some tpu front plates for sure :+1:

I really like your concept with ground game on guido very effective from what I saw, unfortunately I didn’t get to fight you, maybe next time….

Thanks for the reply,

Hollis

What sort of decal did you have in mind? Something like a small, simple logo like on the front of Chaos 2 or a design that covers a large part of the armor like Firestorm?

I’m not very well versed in bot making. All I have right now is the pusher kit bot from Nuts & Bots but I know some builders choose not to paint their bots or add decals because it can actually add unnecessary weight which can be a problem in the ant and beetleweight bots.

Some builders (such as Drumrobotics) add the decals to the robot’s 3d model rather than print out stickers but that’s only if you can sacrifice some weight. You can buy decal paper for printers but it doesn’t do very well on inkjet printers. You’d also have to buy some decal bonding liquid to protect the colours from smudging though and I’m not sure how well those chemicals would react to TPU or other filaments.

Uhhhhhhhhhh I dunno.

I was thinking more firestorm style I guess? Although it doesn’t sound easy. I do most importantly have about 5g spare which should hopefully be enough.

I’ve been searching through the forum and I quite liked Jack’s luchador antweight, especially the big wrestling face on the front, does anyone know how that’s been done?

Thanks for all the advice

Googly eyes. You need to have googly eyes. They look decently cool when they get ripped up and goofy when they’re not. After all:

The most important side quest in any robot competition is, of course*, the googly eye game. There are lots of ways to play it, such as sheer number, hilarity of placement and so on, but for the purist, the only game is who has the biggest.

Needless to say that equipping your robot with a pair of the Mk 1 standard issue eyeball can only be a good thing.

You have plenty of weight don’t worry.

Jack’s Lucha bots use custom stickers that most importantly have the print on the same side as the adhesive so it can be applied to the bottom of the polycarb and show through while protecting from damage.

Paint pens are an easy way to add artistic flair especially if you have a template or print the design debossed into the robot to fill in, which is my preferred method.

Googly eyes!

I do have paint pens,

It’s whether i trust my artistic skill or not that’s the problem…

Do you know of a way of removing the pen if i make a mistake?

No it’ll stain pretty bad. You can try and wipe it quickly but it will smear. Like I say debossing a design into your print and just colouring it in is pretty simple to get a nice finish (see all the black on my latest ant, plus all the stuff on bip and bop)

Oh.

Yes I think the debossing idea will probably work best,

Thanks Craig

Honest opinion but I think it looks great plain; sans decal if that holds any water. I think it looks cute and blocky with the sharp edges and clean lines and any major aesthetics would detract.

Yeah I was thinking maybe if I were to add decals it wouldn’t be a lot for sure.

Thanks for your opinion harry

There is also the lo-fi solution, print out your design on a piece of paper and sellotape it on. Allows you to get a lot finer detail than any paint pens or debossing.

You might get lucky and find a colour that matches the filament. All my robots are black, so if I make a mistake with the white paint pen I go over it with a black one and it’s barely visible! I also often use the black pen as a base for the white one, as paint pens tend to spread out into the layer lines of the print over time.

If you wanted to shift the vibe even more pickle-adjacent it doesn’t take much in the way of shading and linework to make something look like it’s made of pickles.

So basically we’re saying there is loooaaaaaddddssss of ways to do it

I think the

Would do well

The

Might be cool

And the

Would work well

Those are my top 3 picks I think

Or…

Thanks everyone for your help I will take this all into consideration

Unfortunately, I don’t have any colours that match :frowning:

Thanks all,

Hollis

Quick update,

It looks like a go on CAT4 this Saturday so I’ll see ya there if you’re going. I will make sure to give an event update after.

I think for now I will go with the Lo-fi solution (thanks Liam) partly because I just don’t really want to be reprinting stuff now with a tournament fast approaching.

Hollis

Hello everyone!

I have an event report from CAT4!

it went far better than expected finishing with a overall 4-2 record.

First fight: Win! Against angler merkel!

It’s was very close with me being shoved into a wall multiple times but I used some good driving got a few flips in did an insane save from nearly falling into the pit once and flipped angler merkel into the pit!

Second fight: loss :frowning: Against lambro

I started the fight really well, getting round to the side a lot but gave him one chance and he managed to drive me into the pit

3rd and last qualifier: win! Against grey fox 2

You know what, this was such a long close fight with Dominic dominating most of the time… I just want to say how much I appreciate Dominic montaro and his builds I remember showing up to my first ever event and he said hi and gave me some useful pointers on how to improve, and his robots are so good and inspiring, if the video works you will see how high he was yeeting me around the arena. So yeah, thanks Dominic!

Anyway that meant I was through, or was I? Only 1 bot got 3-0 so the Ten who got 2-1 went in a rumble, top seven going through.

I was through, phew!:face_exhaling:

My quarter final match: win against triple threat ladybug

I have to admit I got lucky in this one triple threat got under me multiple times, constantly shoving me into the wall but I got one chance to flip near the pit and triple threat tumbled into the OOTA zone

Semi final: loss against horny forker (the eventual winner)

Well this was a quick fight. My idea going in was to swerve a bunch before I get to him in attempts to send him and get round to the side and it worked… once. Then he kinda just yeeted me in the air over and over again and eventually I got pitted. To be fair there wasn’t really much I could do…. :frowning:

3rd place match: WIN! :3rd_place_medal:against winter vixen

I started okay but Dominic was controlling me so well. Like quite a few of my fights a small opportunity opened up and I took it!

So overall I’m quite happy with the end result there. My first ever top three!

Hollis
