Ayyy congrats on the weight loss your robot looks very trim and healthy now!

I hear you on the hammersaw problem! Sunday Drive has been built primarily to counter spinners and soak up damage from pretty much every type of robot… except hammersaws. There’s a couple of them at MITE next week and they’re gonna be tough…

Don’t be surprised if the bot ends up being a few grams heavier once everything is soldered up and attached to components though. I learned that the hard way lol. If you do end up using the ABS parts at GrocS do let me know I’d love to see how they hold up because I’m probably going to have to do the same for Sunday Drive when I return from MITE.

thank you!!! Yeah, i know it’ll be a couple extra after i’ve done soldering, but i have a lot of weight to play with atm so its not too bad thankfully!

I think you can only be so prepared for some bots, makes me glad im not going to MITE haha, good luck with that. I’ll let you know if i get the chance to use them all! i’m keeping them as spares mainly since i do have a couple more TPU bits spare, some misprinted… but we roll with those punches. Look forward to seeing how it gets on AND how it looks with some beautiful polycarbonate forks :slight_smile:

no real post today, just wanted to show off the two before i properly get them ready. Somatic Damage on the left and my new bot Elephant Wheels on the right! its probably going to be overweight when its weapon arrives but, oh well… its not entered into anything at the moment (but will be in the future) Its going to be an overhead spinner similar to Starchild. Does this idea even work at 150g? god i hope so…

i’ll do more of a showcase of the bot when its all soldered up and ready, but its been a lot of fun designing it so far!

The “Hammersaw-style thwak” idea has been tried before on LumberThwack, try watching a few RoboDojo event videos.

ah, i had no idea! it looks like an interesting robot for sure yeah, i have never really kept track of robodojo events honestly, but its cool that there have been other attempts (hopefully successful ones)

any damage will be unintentional :slight_smile:

besides, i don’t know if i’ll be given that many chances to fight with this robot anyways since the few events i have been to/seen seem to have only one or two slots for full combat anyways, at least in my area… might have to make it more of a thwackbot like gabriel for events that aren’t full combat! but either way would be interesting to see how it performs and functions, since it does seem quite a lot larger than the photos i saw of the bot you mentioned

If Vanquish hasn’t been banned for arena damage this wont be, also the overhead thwack spinners are much more successful at lower weight classes than StarChild at heavyweight, so could be quite competitive

yeah Starchild at beetleweight level seemed like quite a beast! I am interested in how the wheels do hold up, since they are TPU but i feel like they are quite thin in terms of the spokes and edges of the wheel, but maybe i can get a few whiteboards in at GrocS to see how this thing fights? if i even have the space to bring it along…

But yeah! i’d say other than possible floor damage it doesn’t feel like the most threatening thing in the world, especially since Vanquish was partically responsable for almost taking out the camera at BBB if i remember right… so i don’t think i would be the worst offender for arena damages atm :joy:

I would worry about thinner blades vs the wheels, the tpu wheels that will be going on my next GROCS entry are 4mm thick and have a much larger “seam” around the outer diameter, and I’m still not 100% on them surviving bigger horizontals like Flintknock, Reactor or Grevious 3. Still worth a go, TPU really is just that hard to break, miracle material for durability

yeah it definitely is! will be interesting to see how it holds up. mine are currently 5mm thick, but quite thin, but they are quite bendy too so hopefully thatll give it a little bit of an edge, will be interesting to see how it holds up! (if it holds up…)

The only downside to TPU is that you have to get a drier or things get ugly.

Nah, when TPU absorbs moisture it prints like ass and the layer strength is abysmal, its incredibly hydroscopic so even a bit of moisture in the air for a day or 2 is enough to set it off on a tangent.

Can confirm. TPU is a primadonna when it comes to moisture and it ends up being so stringy that it makes whatever you’re printing look like it’s been coated in spider webs. It’s one of those high maintenance filaments that are mind-numbingly frustrating to work with but are extremely useful when printed with successfully.

currently soldering up Somatic Damage ahead of next week’s GrocS event.

I just wanted to ask, since its my first time soldering up a Malenki Nano, what is this second pair of tabs on the MN’s power tab for? Just curious, thanks!

Those just duplicate the power inputs. You can use them for distributing power e.g. to a servo or brushless ESC (or flashy light, or anything else you want).

ah okay, sorry if this is quite literally what you just said, but does that mean you can connect these two connection points into the malenki rather than having to solder the black and red wires together seperately? just trying to be sure since i’d prefer not killing one of these a week before an event haha, plus the latter is what i’ve been used to doing before when using the BBB dual esc’s. I hope all that makes sense!

Yes you can absolutely do that, but I wouldn’t want you to break the board, if you’re happier with joining the wires, do that instead.

ill give it a go with soldering the wires into the malenki if thats the case then, i was watching a few vids from Turnabot about soldering the malenkis up and saw them do something like that with a servo, as long as its something i can do that does work, then i’ll happily give it a go! Would definitely be a lot easier than trying to join the wires up since that can be quite the nightmare sometimes… Thank you for letting me know :slight_smile:
